Vertigo is the false sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving. It is a symptom rather than a disease, and it often comes with dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea and difficulty focusing the eyes. Vertigo and balance problems can affect walking, confidence, driving, work and daily activities, and increase the risk of falls.

Our balance system relies on three sources of information — the inner ear (vestibular system), vision and sensation from the feet and joints — coordinated by the brain. Our rehabilitation program includes balance assessment, vestibular rehabilitation, gait training and functional balance exercises, tailored to each person’s clinical presentation.

Types of Vertigo

  • Peripheral vertigo (more common): Caused by inner ear or vestibular nerve problems — e.g., Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, Ménière’s disease.
  • Central vertigo: Caused by conditions affecting the brain — e.g., stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, vestibular migraine. Often associated with more severe imbalance and walking difficulty.

Common Symptoms

Spinning sensation, light-headedness, unsteadiness, nausea, blurred or bouncing vision with head movement, difficulty in busy or visually complex environments, and feeling off-balance when walking or turning.

Assessment May Include

  • Detailed symptom history and trigger analysis
  • Positional tests for BPPV
  • Eye-movement and gaze-stability tests
  • Static and dynamic balance tests (including instrumented assessment on the TYMO platform)
  • Gait assessment and fall-risk screening

What to Expect

Many people attend a short course of weekly sessions alongside a daily home exercise program; some (e.g., straightforward BPPV) improve in one or two visits, while others need several months. Consistent home practice is key to results.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Vertigo accompanied by chest pain, sudden severe headache, weakness in an arm or leg, slurred speech, double vision, fainting or difficulty walking requires immediate emergency medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Can vertigo be cured?

Many causes, especially BPPV, respond very well to treatment. Some conditions recur, but rehabilitation teaches strategies to manage episodes.

Will the exercises make me dizzy?

Some exercises briefly provoke mild symptoms — this is part of how the brain adapts. Your therapist will keep this at a tolerable level.

Treatment plans are individualised after clinical assessment. Outcomes vary between individuals. This page is general information, not medical advice.
