In a total knee replacement, the worn surfaces of the knee joint are replaced with metal and plastic components. Most people experience much less pain and better movement afterwards, but the knee needs dedicated rehabilitation to regain range of motion and strength. Many people return to most daily activities within about six weeks, while full recovery can take up to a year.

Typical Rehab Timeline (guide only — follows surgeon’s protocol)

Phase 2 Weeks 2–6 Range of motion, strengthening, gait normalisation, stair practice
Phase 3 Weeks 6–12 Functional strength (leg press, step-ups), balance, endurance
