Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, often after an infection. It typically causes tingling and weakness that starts in the feet and legs and can spread upward, sometimes affecting the arms, face, breathing and swallowing.

Weakness usually peaks within a few weeks, after which recovery begins. Recovery can take months to a year or more, and some people may have lingering weakness or fatigue. Rehabilitation plays a central role in helping people regain strength, mobility and independence safely during this recovery period.

Frequently asked questions

Do most people recover from GBS?

Most people improve significantly over time, though the pace varies and some may have residual weakness or fatigue.

Why is pacing important?

Recovering nerves and muscles can be overworked. Our therapists grade exercise carefully to promote steady progress.

Treatment plans are individualised after clinical assessment. Outcomes vary between individuals. This page is general information, not medical advice.
