Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of conditions caused by injury to, or differences in development of, the brain before, during or shortly after birth. It affects muscle tone, movement, posture and coordination. The brain injury itself does not get worse over time, but how CP affects a child can change as they grow — which is why ongoing, well-planned therapy is so valuable.

Types of Cerebral Palsy

CP may affect one side of the body (hemiplegia), mainly the legs (diplegia) or all four limbs (quadriplegia).

  • Spastic CP — the most common type; muscles are stiff and tight, making movement difficult.
  • Dyskinetic CP — involuntary, uncontrolled movements that make purposeful actions difficult.
  • Ataxic CP — difficulty with balance, coordination and precise movements.
  • Mixed CP — features of more than one type.
