Functional Electrical Stimulation delivers small, controlled electrical pulses through skin electrodes to nerves that control weak or paralysed muscles, causing them to contract. Unlike basic muscle stimulation, FES is timed to support a functional task — such as lifting the foot while walking, opening the hand to grasp, or pedalling a cycle.
FES-based rehabilitation can be incorporated into appropriate treatment programs to facilitate functional movement and muscle activation.
Safety Note
FES is not suitable for everyone — e.g., people with certain pacemakers/implanted devices, uncontrolled epilepsy, skin problems at electrode sites, or during pregnancy (over the abdomen). Suitability is confirmed at assessment.
