A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain bleeds (haemorrhagic stroke). The affected brain area can no longer control the functions it is responsible for, which may lead to weakness, loss of coordination, speech difficulties and changes in thinking.

Rehabilitation is one of the most important parts of stroke recovery. Many people continue to improve for months — and often well beyond — with consistent, structured therapy. Our stroke rehabilitation program focuses on improving strength, balance, mobility, gait, upper-limb function, coordination and activities of daily living, and is tailored to each patient’s stage of recovery, functional limitations and personal goals.

Recovery Stages We Support

  • Early / sub-acute stage: Positioning, early mobilisation, sitting balance, transfers, preventing complications.
  • Active recovery stage: Intensive task-specific training, gait and upper-limb rehabilitation.
  • Chronic stage: Continued improvement, fitness, community walking and long-term independence. It is never “too late” to benefit from targeted rehabilitation.

Frequently asked questions

When should stroke rehabilitation start?

As soon as the patient is medically stable and cleared by their doctor. Early rehabilitation is generally associated with better outcomes, but people can still make gains months or years later.

How long does stroke recovery take?

It varies widely. Many people see the most rapid change in the first few months, with ongoing improvement possible over a much longer period.

Can technology help after stroke?

Yes, robotic gait training, exoskeletons, FES and VR allow more repetitions and targeted practice, and are combined with hands-on physiotherapy.

Do family members need to be involved?

We strongly encourage it. Caregiver training helps continue progress safely at home.

Treatment plans are individualised after clinical assessment. Outcomes vary between individuals. This page is general information, not medical advice.
